What is the difference between an Internship and a Co-Op?

By Sahar Rammaha

Have you ever wondered what’s the difference between internships and co-ops? Me too! Here’s what I found out:

Internships:

  • Typically 3-6 months
  • Usually in the summer
  • Hours: Full time mostly
  • Possible college credit
  • Depending on major/position it could be a paid or unpaid internship, so always ask.

Co-Ops:

  • Duration is typically open ended
    • Could be renewed every semester or annually
  • Hours: Part-time (8hrs-25hrs weekly)
  • Always paid
  • Works with a schedule of a full-time student
